If you've searched for Reformer Pilates in Hoboken, NJ and landed here, that's exactly the point. We want to be upfront: Ken Pilates does not have Reformers. We have springboards. And there's a real difference worth knowing before you book.
The Reformer is a horizontal carriage machine with a sliding platform, springs, straps, and a foot bar. It's one of the most recognizable pieces of Pilates equipment and has been in use since Joseph Pilates developed it in the early 20th century. Reformer classes are typically done lying down, seated, or kneeling on the carriage as it slides back and forth.
Reformers are excellent for controlled, low-impact work. They're commonly used in rehabilitation and physical therapy settings.
The springboard, sometimes called a wall unit, is a vertical apparatus mounted to the wall. It uses the same spring resistance as the Reformer, but the orientation is completely different. You work standing, sitting, or moving in multiple planes against vertical spring tension.
The result: more functional movement, more instability challenge, more demand on your coordination and proprioception. The springboard requires your body to stabilize itself rather than relying on a sliding carriage to guide you.
Our SpringSculpt Method was built around the springboard because it integrates three things most studios treat as separate: classical Pilates principles, strength work, and genuine cardiovascular demand. A 50-minute SpringSculpt class at our studio in Hoboken uses heated air, spring resistance, and compound movement patterns that build control from the inside out.
Springboard work also scales differently. One apparatus, one set of springs, and an infinite range of difficulty levels based on spring load, stance, and tempo. Beginners and advanced movers can train side by side and get exactly what they need.
If you want a traditional lying-down reformer session, we are not your studio. We'll say that plainly.
If you want a full-body class that uses spring resistance in a more dynamic, upright, and heated format, Ken Pilates in Hoboken is worth trying. Our SpringSculpt Fundamentals class is designed specifically for new movers, and our instructors cue every body through every rep.
