Mat Sculpt is the class that surprises people. You walk in expecting something gentle and leave understanding that mat-based Pilates with the right tools is a full commitment.
Mat Sculpt combines classic Pilates mat work with a curated set of resistance props: resistance bands, ankle weights, yoga blocks, dumbbells, and the Oov. The Oov is an unstable foam device that challenges your core and spine in ways a flat mat simply cannot. Every element of the prop selection is intentional. Each one adds a layer of demand to movements that would otherwise feel straightforward.
The class is designed for all levels and functions as both a standalone practice and a bridge into the SpringSculpt Method. If you want to build familiarity with Pilates principles and resistance-based movement before stepping onto the springboard, Mat Sculpt gives you that foundation while delivering a complete workout in its own right.
Core strength is the center of every Mat Sculpt sequence. From there, the class moves through glute work, hip stability, upper body engagement, and full-body sculpting sequences that build the long, functional strength Pilates is known for. Flexibility and mobility are woven into the structure throughout, not saved for a cool-down.
Because the class does not use a springboard, the learning curve is lower. The prop-based resistance still challenges your body significantly. Most people find Mat Sculpt harder than they expected and more rewarding than they anticipated.
Mat Sculpt uses gravity and props as resistance. SpringSculpt uses the springboard, which adds a different quality of tension and allows for a broader range of movement patterns. Both are effective. Many Ken Pilates members do both regularly. Mat Sculpt is also a great option on days when you want a slightly lower-intensity session that still delivers real results.
Mat Sculpt is on the regular weekly schedule at Ken Pilates in Hoboken. Check availability and book at kenpilates.com.
