What Is SpringSculpt? Ken Pilates' Signature Method Explained

Post Main Image

If you've seen "SpringSculpt" on our schedule and wondered what it actually is, this is the full explanation. SpringSculpt is not a generic Pilates class. It is the signature class format developed at Ken Pilates in Hoboken, NJ — built around a specific piece of apparatus, a specific movement philosophy, and a specific result.

The Apparatus: The Springboard

SpringSculpt classes are built around the springboard — a vertical apparatus mounted to the wall. The springboard uses spring resistance (the same type used in the Reformer) but positions the body upright rather than lying down on a carriage. You stand, kneel, or sit against spring-loaded bars and straps, working against and with the resistance in multiple planes of movement.

This vertical orientation changes everything. Instead of a machine guiding your movement, your body has to control its own stability while managing the spring load. Your core fires constantly — not because you're doing crunches, but because you're standing on your own two feet against a force that wants to move you.

The Method: Classical Principles, Modern Application

SpringSculpt draws directly from classical Pilates — the sequencing, the emphasis on breath, the priority of precision over volume. But it adds compound movement patterns, controlled tempo, and heat. The result is a class that builds the same deep core stability as classical mat Pilates while also developing real functional strength and cardiovascular fitness.

A standard 50-minute SpringSculpt class moves through standing leg work, upper body pulling and pressing against the springs, core sequences in multiple positions, and a cooldown. Instructors cue breath continuously throughout. The work is dense — you are rarely resting, but you are also never moving at a pace that sacrifices form.

The Heat (in heated formats)

Several SpringSculpt formats are taught in a heated room. HotSprings, our heated springboard class, runs at 90 degrees. The heat increases the cardiovascular demand of the class without adding impact, and allows muscles to move through a fuller range of motion. Not every SpringSculpt class is heated — check the schedule description for each session.

Who It Is For

SpringSculpt is designed for all levels. The spring load is adjustable, the movements scale to individual range of motion, and instructors cue modifications in real time. Beginners should start with SpringSculpt Fundamentals, our dedicated intro format, before moving into the standard SpringSculpt Method class. Advanced movers will find the class genuinely challenging at full load and full tempo.
